Amazing Apple Oatmeal

When you think of oatmeal, do you conjure up images of paper pouches filled with artificially flavoured sawdust? Sadly, this is what oatmeal has become for many people.

If you’ve been messing with those instant packets, it’s time to up your game! Oatmeal is a performance food that can sustain y13735953_1803693043178645_570377333_nou for hours!

Truth be told, real oatmeal is almost as quick to prepare and tastes leaps and bounds better than the instant stuff. What’s more, it’s a healthy and nutritious food that is good any time of day, not just as a breakfast. It can make a great lunch, dinner or snack too!

It is full of fibre, rich in iron, protein and most importantly complex carbs to fuel you for work and exercise.

There are many ways to prepare oatmeal. This is one preparation I’ve gotten hooked on lately.

You might say, “Hey Kyle, oatmeal is so easy to prepare. Who needs a recipe?” It’s not so much a recipe, but a reminder that food should be simple. This is food to feed you for the daily grind. Gourmet froufrou isn’t going to cut it. You need something that’s going to stick to your ribs that you can whip up in a pinch.

When the delicious scent of apples and cinnamon fill your house, no one will know this delicious meal took you almost no time to prepare anyway!

Ingredients:

1 cup quick or regular rolled oats (Not Instant!)

1 medium apple, diced into small cubes (honey crisp works great!)

1/4 cup Thompson raisins

1/4 tsp cinnamon

2 cups water

1 tbsp ground flaxseed

1 tbsp dark brown sugar (optional)

Combine the oats,  diced apple, raisins, cinnamon and water in a large microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high for 3-5 minutes depending on the power of your microwave. Stir in the flaxseed and dark brown sugar. Enjoy!

Feel free to add any other toppings you enjoy – a splash of soymilk, some crushed walnuts or fresh berries.
